“Wild Urbanism” – that’s what they call the approach to this revolutionary park, a place where nature and architecture intertwine to form a harmonious whole. We stand now in Zaryadye Park, an urban oasis right in the heart of Moscow, steps away from the iconic Red Square. Before 2017, this land housed a large hotel, the Rossiya, the largest in Europe until its demolition in 2007. But this was no ordinary plot of land. It has been a Jewish enclave, a site for a cancelled Stalinist skyscraper, and now a park that has become a symbol of modern Moscow. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Hargreaves Associates and Citymakers, the park took five years to build. The design competition was a challenging one, with more than 90 submissions from 27 countries, and Diller Scofidio + Renfro’s winning concept sought to honour Moscow’s rich past, while embracing modern advancements. Zaryadye Park is more than just an escape from city life. It is a journey through the diverse landscapes of Russia, with each section replicating a different region. You can stroll through the tundra, imagine yourself in the steppe, wander through a forest, and even experience the tranquility of a wetland. These zones are arranged in a series of terraces that descend from northeast to southwest, creating a captivating flow. While the park’s natural beauty is undeniable, it’s the inventive technological additions that make Zaryadye truly extraordinary. Walk across the Soaring Bridge, a thin V-shaped structure that extends 70 meters over the Moscow River with no visible support. The bridge is a testament to engineering marvels. And then there’s the Media Center, an impressive facility that showcases Russia’s cultural heritage and the architectural wonders of the country. This park is a living example of Moscow’s ambition, a place where history and technology join forces to create an astounding urban experience.
