“Malinovka” what a sweet name for a park. Did you know that the name Malinovka is possibly misleading? Some historians think it comes from the Finnish word for mill. Others say it is from the berry raspberry since they grew there.
Welcome to Malinovka Park. This green space is nestled in the Krasnogvardeysky district of Saint Petersburg. It is a beloved spot for locals.
Malinovka Park covers about 16 hectares. The park’s history is interesting. Once, a small settlement stood here near the Malinovka River. The river was later named Narvin or Black River. The water was dark and said to be unpleasant. By the late 1890s the river was so polluted. Using the water for food was prohibited.
In the late 19th century the village of Malinovka became populated by St. Petersburg residents. There were only 18 houses and about 200 people. By 1889 ships could no longer travel on the Okhta River. This led to a decline in the village.
By 1970 the Malinovka River was filled. Two ponds appeared in its place. Malinovka Park was established in the 1980s. It officially gained its name in the late 2000s.
Today, Malinovka Park is the only large green space in the Krasnogvardeysky district. Here, you can find birch trees maples oaks and lindens.
Notice Pokrov Church in Malinovka Park. It is a central feature built in the 2000s. There were scandalous plans to build a large cathedral. Locals protested these plans. They wanted to protect Malinovka Park. In 2021 the plans were rejected.
