Sculpted in triumph, the Памятник казакам Sculpture stands as a bold tribute. It commemorates the Cossacks of the 1812 war, including M.I. Kutuzov and M.B. Barclay-de-Tolly. Emperor Alexander I commissioned the monument in 1829. The sculptor, Vasily Demuth-Malinovsky, was tasked with capturing the spirit of these warriors. The original sculptures were completed in 1832 for Kutuzov and 1836 for Barclay-de-Tolly. However, there was a delay in placing the monuments in their intended location. Only on December 25, 1837, two days after the official unveiling of other war of 1812 monuments, were the Cossack monuments finally revealed. Interestingly, B.I. Orlovsky initially rejected the idea of including equestrian statues in favor of representing these Cossack heroes as more ordinary figures. The Cossack figures stand at about 4 meters tall, while the mounted figures are slightly larger at 4.1 meters, and the pedestrian figures at 3.5 meters. Inscribed on the pedestal below Kutuzov’s monument are the words, “To Field Marshal Prince Kutuzov of Smolensk from the grateful Fatherland 1812”. The Barclay-de-Tolly monument carries a similar inscription, “To Field Marshal Prince Barclay-de-Tolly 1812, 1813, 1814, 1815”. The monument is not just a static sculpture. It tells a story of military prowess and the complexities of historical memory.
