The Monument to Warriors-Internationalists was unveiled on December 27 2004. The date marked the 25th anniversary of Soviet troops entering Afghanistan. Afghan veterans attended the opening ceremony. Special forces who stormed Amin’s palace also attended. Representatives of veterans’ organizations were present too.
This monument’s creation was driven by veterans. Organizations of Afghan war veterans donated to the cause. Internationalist soldiers made personal contributions. The Moscow government also supported the monument.
