This seemingly unremarkable building holds a secret. Most visitors are distracted by the grand structures. They overlook this modest building. Yet, its history is surprisingly dramatic.

These are the Palaty Tsarevny Sofi. It is located in the Novodevichy Convent. Many visitors admire Novodevichy Convent’s beautiful buildings. Few realize the convent was rebuilt in the late 17th century. It happened during Tsarevna Sofia’s rule.

During Sofia’s reign, many old structures in the monastery were destroyed. New walls replaced old ones. The monastery’s territory expanded. It was quite a transformation. The main buildings of the Novodevichy Convent arose under Tsarevna Sofia’s patronage. This included its walls, towers, churches and bell towers. This construction boom occurred in the 1680s.

Key buildings during Tsarevna Sofia’s time were the Refectory with the Assumption Church. Also the Intercession Church over the Gate, and the bell towers. The Preobrazhenskaya Church above the northern gates dates from 1687 to 1689.

Tsarevna Sofia oversaw construction. It even continued during the turbulent Streltsy Uprising. In fact, the construction of the bell tower was under her guidance. This was during the Streltsy Uprising. The event threatened her power.

These chambers served a vital purpose. They were part of a defensive line. The chambers connected to the wall near the Naprudnaya Tower. Some sources call the chambers the “Palaces of Tsarevna Sofia.” It was not a typical palace. Palaces in Russia were usually grander buildings. Within the monastery, similar structures were built near the corner towers.

The Naprudnaya Tower is the most simple and functional. The Tsarevna Sofia’s chambers connect to it. It is hard to imagine the Tsars daughter living in this monastic complex. She oversaw a decade of construction. She lived a life of austerity in these “palaces.”

Today, you can see museum exhibits here. The interiors showcase what life might have been like. The central chamber features a stove adorned with tiles. Soviet masters reconstructed this stove. Most of its tiles are based on originals. Vaulted ceilings connect the rooms.

At the top level, you see all the doorways and windows. These features represent the typical palace design of the 17th century. For museum purposes, the rooms are decorated. They feature bright red walls. There is display lighting. The museum is also adorned with vitrines with even lighting. While beautiful it sets a very festive mood. It is hard to imagine the stark life of the 17th century. However, you can view the room on the upper level. There you will find a display devoted to the famous icon.

Also be sure to visit the Naprudnaya Tower. The Naprudnaya Tower also has a museum exhibit. You can get amazing photos of the iconic women, including Tsarevna Sofia.

Today, remember the story of Tsarevna Sofia. She was a gifted woman. She faced an uncertain position. In historical terms, she served as an option for future empresses. They would learn to either seize power or retreat to a convent. Under Sofia, this became a place with remarkable architecture. It documented Tsarevna Sofia’s actions.
