Personal contributions from internationalist soldiers and support from the Moscow government also helped. Sculptors S. A. Shcherbakov and S. S. Shcherbakov designed the monument. Architects Yu. P. Grigoriev and S. Grigoriev also contributed.

The opening of the monument and the \u041f\u0430\u0432\u0448\u0438\u043c \u0432 \u0410\u0444\u0433\u0430\u043d\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0439 \u0432\u043e\u0439\u043d\u0435 Plaque took place on December 27 2004. This date marked the 25th anniversary of the Soviet troops entering Afghanistan. Afghan veterans and special forces who stormed Amin’s palace attended the ceremony. Representatives from veterans’ organizations were also present.
