In the heart of St. Petersburg, nestled between the Neva and Okhta rivers, lies Malaya Okhta. A quiet district today, Malaya Okhta holds a vibrant past. The name itself, Malaya Okhta, whispers of its connection to the larger Okhta River. This area was once a bustling hub. Here, along the banks of the Malaya Okhta, residents, known as Okhtintsy, lived their lives tied to the river’s ebb and flow. Malaya Okhta received its name from the Okhta River. It’s situated on the left bank, distinguishing it from the right bank or Bolshaya Okhta. This distinction, Malaya (small) and Bolshaya (large), speaks to the geographical layout. Malaya Okhta was officially recognized in 1720. This makes it a relatively young area compared to the ancient heart of St. Petersburg. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, this area transformed into a workers’ district. In 1922, Malaya Okhta became officially part of the city of Leningrad. Malaya Okhta witnessed extensive development throughout the 20th century. New residential buildings sprung up in the 1920s and 1930s. Later, in the 1950s, the area became home to the Zanevsky housing estate. This solidified Malaya Okhta’s position as a residential hub. The Novocherkasskaya metro station, opened in 1985, improved connectivity and further established Malaya Okhta’s place within the fabric of St. Petersburg.
