Who was this man whose bronze gaze seems to pierce through time itself? This is Nikolai Nikolaevich Polikarpov. His bust stands before us a testament to a life intertwined with the rise of Soviet aviation.

Nikolai Nikolaevich Polikarpov was a brilliant Soviet aircraft designer. He is known as the King of Fighters. Polikarpov designed many of the biplanes and fixed-wing aircraft used by the Soviet military. His innovative designs significantly impacted the course of aviation history. This bust honors his remarkable contributions.

His career wasn’t without its challenges. In 1929 Polikarpov faced arrest. He was sent to Butyrka Prison in Moscow. The reason? Failure to deliver the I-6 fighter on time under the 1928 Five-Year Plan. Initially sentenced to death his sentence was commuted. He was granted amnesty in 1931 after a successful demonstration of the I-5 fighter prototype.

But Polikarpov’s most groundbreaking achievement was the I-16 Ishak. This 1933 design was revolutionary. It was the world’s first cantilever-winged monoplane fighter with retractable landing gear. Hundreds of I-16s served in the Spanish Civil War. They were also a mainstay of the Soviet Air Force until 1943.

Polikarpov’s talent earned him prestigious recognition. He was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1940. He also won Stalin Prizes in 1941 and 1943. Even a mountain peak in Central Asia bears his name Polikarpov Peak. His legacy continues to inspire generations of engineers and pilots.

Sadly Polikarpov died of gallbladder disease shortly after his 52nd birthday. Yet his impact on aviation remains undeniable. This bust in Moscow serves as a permanent reminder of his genius and unwavering dedication. His story is one of triumph adversity and lasting impact. This Nikolai Nikolaevich Polikarpov bust is a powerful symbol of a pivotal era in aviation.
