“IT’s MOre than a UNIVERSITY!” Has this slogan piqued your interest? Today we explore ITMO University. It is a leading institution in Saint Petersburg Russia. It is formally known as National Research University ITMO. But locals and the international community simply call it ITMO University.
ITMO’s history is rich. It stretches back to 1900. Then it began as a department of Mechanics Optics and Watchmaking. This was within the Prince Nicholas Vocational School. It was the first of its kind in Russia. It uniquely combined mechanics optics and watchmaking.
Let’s jump to 1917. The department evolved into its own entity. It was named Petrograd Technical College for Mechanics Optics and Watchmaking. This was a pivotal moment for ITMO. It signified its growing importance as an educational hub.
In 1930 the college was transformed again. It became Leningrad Training Center. Then in 1933 it achieved status as a separate college. It became the Leningrad Institute of Fine Mechanics and Optics LIFMO.
Fast forward to 1992. LIFMO gained a new name. It became Saint Petersburg Institute of Fine Mechanics and Optics. University status followed in 1994. The institution continued evolving. It embraced new technologies and disciplines. The Faculty of Computer Technologies and Controls was founded.
The early 2000s brought more change. In 2003 the institute was renamed. It became Saint Petersburg State University of Information Technologies Mechanics and Optics. In 2009 ITMO achieved National Research University Status. It was officially renamed National Research University ITMO in 2011. The name ITMO University was finally adopted in 2014.
