What happened at Mindelund Graveyard during World War II? You might be surprised to know that Mindelund Graveyard holds a poignant and deeply moving history. It’s a place of remembrance, dedicated to the brave souls of the Danish resistance who fought against the Nazi occupation during World War II. Mindelund Graveyard, also known as Ryvangen Memorial Park, wasn’t always a peaceful resting place. During the occupation, this very ground served a much darker purpose. In 1943, the German forces seized control of the Ryvangen area, which was originally a military barracks and exercise field. They used the barracks for their troops but transformed the exercise field into an execution and burial site for captured resistance members. Imagine the weight of that history, the stories etched into the very soil beneath our feet. Here, at Mindelund Graveyard, brave men and women faced their final moments, bound to wooden poles and executed by firing squads. Their bodies were then hastily buried in unmarked graves. Their sacrifice remained largely unknown until Denmark’s liberation in May 1945. It was then that the grim reality of Ryvangen was revealed. Resistance members, upon arriving at the site, discovered 202 graves. The remains were exhumed for identification. While some families chose to rebury their loved ones elsewhere, many opted to let them rest here. On August 29, 1945, a solemn procession of 106 hearses carried the remains of these heroes through Copenhagen to their final resting place at Mindelund Graveyard. In the heart of the graveyard, a memorial stone stands in silent tribute to the 91 resistance members who were exhumed. They now lie in cemeteries closer to their homes. There’s also a memorial wall, etched with the names of 151 resistance members whose remains were never found. Mindelund Graveyard is more than just a cemetery. It’s a powerful testament to the unyielding spirit of those who fought for Denmark’s freedom, a symbol of their courage in the face of overwhelming odds. It serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of war and the indomitable spirit of resistance.
