Mil founded the Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant. He designed many famous helicopters. His work earned him numerous awards. He received the Hero of Socialist Labour award in 1966. He also won three Orders of Lenin.

Mil’s journey started in Irkutsk. He was born into a Russian Jewish family. His father worked for the Trans-Siberian Railway. His mother was a dentist. His grandfather was a cantonist. He served in the Imperial Russian Navy for 25 years. He eventually settled in Siberia.

Young Mil’s passion for flight ignited early. At 12 he won a model glider competition. He studied aviation engineering. He graduated in 1931. He started his career at TsAGI. He specialized in autogyros. He worked with his future rival Nikolai Kamov.

World War II interrupted his work. Mil served on the Eastern Front in 1941. He was called back in 1943 to improve aircraft stability. He completed his dissertations. In 1947 he led the Helicopter Lab at TsAGI. This later became the Moscow Helicopter Plant.

Mil’s helicopters were renowned globally. The Mil Mi-4 won a gold medal at the Brussels International Exposition in 1958. After his death his Mil Mi-12 won the Sikorsky Prize. It was the most powerful helicopter. His single-rotor designs were particularly acclaimed. They contrasted with Kamov’s co-axial rotor designs.
