In the heart of St. Petersburg, a bronze figure sits, a manuscript resting on his lap. This is M. V. Lomonosov, the “Father of Russian Science”. M. V. Lomonosov’s memorial isn’t just a statue. It is a symbol of a relentless pursuit of knowledge, a story of scientific discovery against the backdrop of 18th-century Russia. M. V. Lomonosov, born in a remote northern village, yearned for education. He walked to Moscow, fabricated his nobility to enter the Slavic Greek Latin Academy. His passion propelled him through a rigorous twelve-year curriculum in just five years. He secured a scholarship at the St. Petersburg Academy, then journeyed to Germany, studying under the Enlightenment giant, Christian Wolff. M. V. Lomonosov’s time in Marburg shaped his philosophical and scientific pursuits. He delved into chemistry, discovered Boyle’s works, and even began composing poetry. He married Elizabeth Christine Zilch in Marburg, struggling to support his family on a meager allowance. Back in Russia, M. V. Lomonosov established the academy’s first chemistry laboratory. He challenged Boyle’s experiments, disproving the phlogiston theory and foreshadowing Lavoisier’s conservation of mass law. His work resonated across disciplines. He proposed a corpuscular theory of matter, anticipating molecules and atoms. He viewed heat as motion, advanced the wave theory of light, and contributed to the kinetic theory of gases. His 1761 observation of Venus’s transit led him to deduce its atmosphere. He even designed a reflecting telescope with an angled mirror, predating Herschel’s similar design. M. V. Lomonosov’s influence extended beyond the scientific realm. He championed the development of modern Russian literary language. He wrote poetry, tragedies, and even attempted an epic about Peter the Great. M. V. Lomonosov tirelessly advocated for Russia’s educational system. His efforts culminated in the founding of Moscow University in 1755. This three-meter bronze statue, unveiled in 1986, commemorates M. V. Lomonosov’s 275th birthday. It is positioned between the Twelve Colleges and the Academy of Sciences. These institutions are a tangible legacy of M. V. Lomonosov’s dedication to knowledge and his enduring contribution to Russia’s scientific and cultural landscape. The polished red marble pedestal, designed by architects Igor Shakhov and Eduard Tyakht, reflects the brilliance of the man it honors.
