Opera’s grand return to this very stage, the magnificent Музыкальный театр имени Шаляпина, echoes through time. It was here, in 1912, within the walls of what was then the People’s House of Emperor Nicholas II, that Glinka’s “A Life for the Tsar” first graced this opera hall. Now known as the Музыкальный театр имени Шаляпина, this building has witnessed a fascinating evolution, from imperial entertainment to the heart of revolution, and finally, to the renowned music hall it is today. The original People’s House, a grand complex dedicated to cultural enlightenment, was built between 1900 and 1912 in Alexander Park. Its opera hall, a marvel of its time, boasted seating for 2800, including an amphitheater and numerous lodges. But the People’s House was more than just opera. It housed drama and ballet troupes, offering diverse performances to a wide audience. A key figure in the theater’s history is the legendary Feodor Chaliapin. From 1913 to 1917, this stage was his artistic home, where he not only captivated audiences with his powerful voice but also directed productions. Imagine him here, embodying the characters of Don Quixote and Philippe II, his performances becoming the stuff of legends. In the tumultuous aftermath of the February Revolution, the People’s House became a venue for political gatherings. In 1917, Lenin himself stood within these walls, addressing the 1st All-Russia Congress of Peasant Delegates. This event cemented the building’s historical significance, earning it recognition as a Federal Monument of History and Culture. The building faced a period of uncertainty, housing various theaters and even a cinema, before the second Leningrad Music Hall was established here in 1966, under the direction of Ilya Rakhlin. For over two decades, the music hall thrived in a different location before finally returning to its original home in 1988. The theater we celebrate today carries the name of Feodor Chaliapin, honoring his legacy and contribution to this historic venue. It continues to enchant audiences with a wide array of performances, from classic musicals to the grand operas that once filled this magnificent hall.
