Can you imagine a city protected by a chain of formidable forts? Here at the Museum of Fort Models of Kronstadt, we explore the fascinating history of these very defenses. The museum showcases incredibly detailed models of Kronstadt’s forts, painstakingly recreated at a 1:87 scale. These aren’t just toys. They are miniature time capsules, allowing us to witness Kronstadt’s strategic importance and evolution over 300 years. The museum offers a unique blend of interactive exhibits, including 3D mapping, which brings these tiny fortresses to life. You can practically feel the sea spray and hear the distant cannons. The Museum of Fort Models of Kronstadt helps visitors understand the complexity of Kronstadt’s defenses. The museum offers walking tours and a unique excursion focused on the Obvodny Canal of Kronstadt. The cost is about 450 rubles per person. The museum itself opened its doors in July 2021, within the historic Hollandskay Kitchen, a relic of the late 19th century. This remarkable building was originally designed by architect Avraam Melnikov in 1805, intended for food preparation and storage for Kronstadt’s sailors. Later, in the early 20th century, it served as an electrical substation before its recent restoration and transformation into this museum. The exhibits here at the Museum of Fort Models of Kronstadt trace the history of Kronstadt’s fortifications through several centuries. From the early forts like “Peter I,” originally named “Citadel” but renamed after flooding in 1824, to the later “forts of the new era,” built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, leading up to World War I. The museum showcases a remarkable variety of fort models. These include the “Count Milyutin” fort with its “Eusalk” armored battery, the “Grand Duke Konstantin” and “Totleben” forts. You’ll learn about the evolving design and strategic importance of these fortresses in protecting the approaches to St. Petersburg. The museum is open daily from 10:15 am to 10:00 pm, with timed entry.
