“Let them enter!” echoes not from a place of welcome, but from a desperate defense during the Siege of Samarkand. This siege is remembered at the Monument to the Defenders of Samarkand 1868. It stands as a testament to a pivotal moment in the city’s history.

The Monument to the Defenders of Samarkand 1868 commemorates the courage and resilience displayed during the Siege of Samarkand. In 1868, the Russian Empire was expanding its reach into Central Asia. Samarkand, a city with a rich history dating back to the 4th century BCE, found itself at the center of this conflict.

The siege began when forces from the Bokharan Emirate and their allies, including the Kokand Khanate and Turkmen-Uzbek tribes, descended upon Samarkand. A small Russian garrison of 685 men, many of whom were wounded or non-combatants, was left to defend the city. The commander of the garrison, Baron Stempel, withdrew his forces to the citadel. It was armed with 25 cannons and stocked with provisions. The allied army laid siege to the citadel. Over three days, they made several breaches in the walls. Yet, the Russian defenders repelled every attempt to storm the citadel.

One Russian officer, Nazarov, distinguished himself during the siege. Vasily Vereshchagin, a future war artist, also earned commendation for his heroic actions. As the siege wore on, word reached General von Kaufmann. He quickly marched his main force back to relieve the city. The besiegers retreated. The Russian garrison had suffered heavy casualties. 221 men were killed or wounded.

The victory at Samarkand solidified the Russian Empire’s control over Turkestan. It was also seen as a symbol of renewed Russian heroism. The Monument to the Defenders of Samarkand 1868 serves as a reminder of this important historical event. It honors the soldiers and civilians who defended the city against overwhelming odds. It stands as a symbol of courage. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of Samarkand.
