Born into a family of metalworkers, Ivan Tkachenko’s life began on March 15, 1916. His birthplace, Donetsk, now rests within Ukraine. We stand today at the Могила Героя Советского Союза В. И. Ткаченко, a memorial to his heroism. Ivan Tkachenko’s journey from a young metalworker to a decorated Hero of the Soviet Union is a testament to bravery and resilience. He joined the Red Army in 1940, right before the storm of war broke. Tkachenko served with distinction on the Western Front, the very first line of defense against the Nazi invasion in 1941. By 1943, he had completed the Podolsk Artillery School. He returned to the front lines, commanding a mortar battalion. Tkachenko’s leadership was instrumental in numerous operations. These included the liberation of Left-Bank Ukraine, the Zhitomir-Berdichev, Proskurov-Chernovitsa, Lvov-Sandomierz, Sandomierz-Silesian, and Lower Silesian offensives. He participated in the battles for Zhitomir, Berdichev, Proskurov, Chernovtsy, Lvov, Sandomierz, and the storming of the Oder River. Tkachenko consistently exhibited exceptional skill, courage, and unwavering dedication. His actions earned him numerous accolades. Among them, the Order of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner, two Orders of the Patriotic War 2nd class, the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky, and many medals. The citation for his “Hero of the Soviet Union” title details his strategic brilliance and unwavering bravery during the battle for Berlin. As commander of the 3rd Guards Tank Army’s mortar battalion, Tkachenko led his troops in a daring and decisive assault. This attack significantly weakened the enemy’s defenses. It paved the way for a crucial breakthrough in the final stages of the war. In the final battles for the city of Berlin, Tkachenko’s leadership was again critical. He personally directed the suppression of enemy firing points, enabling his battalion to advance and capture key strategic positions. While spearheading an attack near the Neisse River, Tkachenko sustained severe injuries. He succumbed to these wounds on April 18, 1945, just weeks before the war’s end. He was laid to rest here, at the Bogoslovskoye Cemetery in Saint Petersburg. The Могила Героя Советского Союза В. И. Ткаченко stands as a solemn reminder of Tkachenko’s immense sacrifice. He gave his life fighting for his country.
