“Let’s dive into a fairy tale” someone once said. The Mosaic Courtyard in St. Petersburg is no ordinary courtyard. It is a hidden gem that few locals even know about.

In 1984 the Small Academy of Arts named “Volcano” opened not far from the Russian State Museum. Vladimir Lubenko, an honored artist of Russia, founded the academy. He gathered his first group of students. Then he invited them to participate in an unusual project. The main idea was to decorate the academy.

The children agreed and the work began. Soon this gray courtyard turned into a magical space. Original mosaics and bas-reliefs appeared on the walls. Colorful sculptures were added as well as an unusual playground. The creative group decorated everything with special colored glasses. They even decorated the curbs and benches.

The Mosaic Courtyard is a unique art object hidden in St. Petersburg. Each element can be studied separately. It is incredibly fun. Objects are sometimes reconstructed to maintain brightness. New exhibits are created in parallel.

The house at Tchaikovsky Street 2/7 was built in 1780. It once housed a court laundry. The building overlooks the Fontanka River. It is an architectural monument of classicism called the “House of Baur”. Many famous people lived there. They include Osip Mandelstam and Anna Akhmatova.

Sculptures are made of multicolored mosaics. They stand out against the green trees. In winter they shimmer against the white snow. The fountain is one of the main objects but only operates in warmer months. The courtyard is open daily around the clock.

The Mosaic Courtyard will become part of your St. Petersburg memories. This unusual place makes a favorable impression. Guests can experience something great and beautiful by visiting it.

Vladimir Lubenko and his students created this open-air museum. It is decorated with a variety of sculptures and installations covered with mosaics. The mosaics add bright colors to the urban routine. Benches, flower beds and the playground are laid out with strange shapes. All of them will satisfy every person. Talented hands filled the court with a fairy-tale atmosphere. It is a complex but good story.
