Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates. It is a key place of worship. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan built it. He wanted to create a structure uniting Islamic cultures. He also wanted to reflect historical and modern values.

Construction spanned from 1996 to 2007. The mosque opened in December 2007. The complex covers over 12 hectares. That is approximately 30 acres. The main axis aligns toward the Kaaba in Mecca.

Sheikh Zayed passed away in 2004. He was buried in the mosque courtyard. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center manages daily operations. It offers educational activities and visitor programs. The library houses classic books on Islamic subjects.

The mosque’s design reflects various Islamic styles. Persian Mughal and Moorish elements blend harmoniously. It features 82 domes and over 1000 columns. Chandeliers are gilded with 24-carat gold. It also features the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet.

Yusef Abdelki a Syrian architect led the design. He drew inspiration from mosques in Alexandria and Lahore. Natural materials like marble stone gold and crystals were used. Artisans came from many countries.

The courtyard showcases a stunning floral mosaic. British artist Kevin Dean designed it. It features flowers from the Middle East. Inlaid colored marble creates vibrant patterns.

The mosque can accommodate over 40000 worshippers. The main prayer hall holds over 7000. Four minarets rise 107 meters high. The courtyard’s marble mosaic is the world’s largest.

Sivec marble from North Macedonia clads the exterior. Lasa marble from Italy is used inside. Makrana marble from India features in annexes.

The carpet in the main hall is massive. It was made by Iran’s Carpet Company. Iranian artist Ali Khaliqi designed it. About 1200-1300 knotters worked on it. The carpet weighs 35 tons.

Seven chandeliers adorn the mosque. They came from Faustig in Munich Germany. The largest is one of the biggest mosque chandeliers. It has millions of Swarovski crystals.

The lighting system reflects the phases of the moon. Speirs and Major Associates designed it. Bluish-gray clouds are projected onto the walls. They change with the lunar cycle.

The Qibla wall features the 99 names of God. Mohammed Mandi Al Tamimi designed the Kufic calligraphy. Fiber-optic lighting enhances the design. Naskhi Thuluth and Kufic calligraphy styles are used.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is more than a building. It embodies a vision of unity. It showcases Islamic art and architecture. It is a lasting legacy of Sheikh Zayed’s dream. It stands as a beacon of tolerance. It inspires awe in visitors from all over the world.
