What does Namazgoh mean? The name of this mosque translates from Persian as a place for prayer. This hints at the Мечеть’s important role in Samarkand.

Samarkand is an ancient city with a rich history. It served as a vital point on the Silk Road. This Мечеть is one of the oldest mosques in Samarkand. It was purposefully built outside the city. This was to keep it separate from the bustling city center.

Мечеть Namazgoh is often written as Namazgah or Namozgoh. The word “namaz” means prayer in Persian. So Namazgoh means a place for prayer. This evolved to mean a mosque located outside the city limits. Today this Мечеть Namazgoh is no longer on the edge of the city.

The town Мечеть Namazgoh was constructed in the 17th century. It features a typical Islamic architectural style of that time. Unfortunately the architects remain unknown. However the Мечеть benefited from the financial support of Nadir Muhammad Divanbegi.

Nadir Muhammad Divanbegi lived from 1568 to 1644. He was a prominent Uzbek politician. He served as Minister of Finance. He was also a personal vizier to Imamkuli-khan. From 1632 to 1633 Nadir Divanbegi was the Hakim. That means chief judge of the Samarkand region.

Nadir Divanbegi oversaw the construction. He contributed to various religious buildings in Samarkand and Bukhara. Notably in Bukhara is the Ensemble of Nadir Divan-Begi.

Historically this Мечеть Namazgoh served as a town Мечеть. This included a reservoir and shady gardens. It functioned as a Juma Мечеть. This is a Friday mosque. Collective prayers occurred with all Muslims present.

Today this Мечеть Namazgoh sits in the southern part of Samarkand. It is somewhat removed from typical tourist routes. This unassuming exterior hides its architectural spirit.

Built in the 17th century the town Мечеть Namazgoh embodies simplicity. Its importance lies not in grandiosity. Instead its importance lies in the spiritual experience it offers. Approaching the Мечеть Namazgoh you may first notice its modest facade. This masks the depth of history within. Behind the walls lies a sanctuary. It offers peace away from the city. This Мечеть provides a space for reflection. Its architecture reflects the era in which it was built. It stands as a testament to Samarkand’s enduring Islamic heritage. Remember as you stand here that this has been a place of prayer for centuries.
