Established in 1747, Smolensky Lutheran Cemetery is a significant historical site in Saint Petersburg. The cemetery’s name, derived from the nearby Smolenka River, connects it to the Smolensky Orthodox Cemetery across the water. Smolensky Lutheran Cemetery became the final resting place for many prominent figures, largely ethnic Germans, reflecting Saint Petersburg’s diverse cultural heritage. It served as one of the city’s primary non-Orthodox burial grounds until the 20th century. The cemetery’s grounds hold the remains of individuals who contributed significantly to science, the arts, and military. Leonhard Euler, the renowned mathematician, rests here. Germain Henri Hess, whose contributions to thermochemistry laid the groundwork for modern chemical engineering, is also buried at Smolensky Lutheran Cemetery. Military leaders like Friedrich Michael L\u00fctke and Jos\u00e9 de Ribas found their final resting place in these hallowed grounds. Beyond the famous names, Smolensky Lutheran Cemetery became a repository of countless personal stories. Each weathered headstone represents a life lived in Saint Petersburg. Robert Leinonen, a dedicated researcher, meticulously documented the state of the cemetery between 1988 and 1991. His two-volume work, “Deutsche in St. Petersburg,” provides a glimpse into the lives and deaths of those interred here. His work has become an essential resource for genealogists and historians alike, offering a rich tapestry of the city’s cultural past. Unfortunately, not all stories have happy endings. Parts of Smolensky Lutheran Cemetery were tragically destroyed during the latter part of the Soviet era. A large section was leveled in 1985 to make way for a fire station. Another area fell victim to the construction of a petrol station in the early 1990s. These losses underscore the fragility of history and the importance of preserving sites like Smolensky Lutheran Cemetery.
