“Did you notice the four charming Doric pavilions?” These pavilions give Lomonosov Bridge its distinctive look. We are standing before the Lomonosov Bridge. It is a beautiful and historic bridge in Saint Petersburg.

Lomonosov Bridge spans the Fontanka River. It is located about 300 meters south of Nevsky Prospekt. The bridge is named after Mikhail Lomonosov. He was a famous Russian polymath. Lomonosov excelled in chemistry, mathematics, linguistics, and literature. He embodied the Russian Enlightenment.

Originally, the bridge was called Chernyshev Bridge. This was in honor of Count Grigory Chernyshev. He was a prominent general under Peter the Great. His estates were nearby. The Lomonosov Bridge was built between 1785 and 1787. It replaced a wooden bridge. It was one of seven similar stone movable bridges built over the Fontanka River. These bridges were built at the same time as the river’s granite embankments. Today only Lomonosov Bridge and Staro-Kalinkin Bridge remain intact.

The Lomonosov Bridge measures 57.1 meters. It features two broad arched side spans. The central span was originally made of wood. It was replaced with steel in 1913. The bridge no longer rises for river traffic. However, it still has its four Doric pavilions. These once housed the drawbridge mechanism.

In 1915 granite obelisks were added. They have elegant cast-iron streetlamps. In 1948 the bridge was renamed Lomonosov Bridge. It was named after the great Russian scientist and writer.

During the mid-19th century many bridges had their towers removed. This was done to ease traffic. But Lomonosov Bridge kept its original look. It has four rusticated Doric pavilions. They are topped with small domed caps.

The Lomonosov Bridge is the best-preserved example. It shows the towered movable bridges typical of 18th-century Saint Petersburg. Its historical and architectural significance is clear. This makes it a must-see for anyone exploring Saint Petersburg. The Lomonosov Bridge stands as a reminder of the city’s rich history. It also shows its commitment to preserving its unique architectural heritage. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty and historical importance. Let us move on to our next destination.
