Many consider him the founder of scientific pedagogy in the Russian Empire. The statue was erected in 1961. It stands on the embankment of the Moika River. It is in front of the Russian State Pedagogical University named after A. I. Herzen.

Early plans for a monument to \u041a. \u0414. \u0423\u0448\u0438\u043d\u0441\u043a\u043e\u043c\u0443 emerged before the October Revolution. A committee formed to gather funds. A contest for project designs was announced in 1914. Sculptor N. L. Aronson won the contest. They planned to erect the monument near house number 8 on Serdobolskaya Street. This was in front of the future Ushinsky school. However these plans never materialized.

A final decision to erect a monument to \u041a. \u0414. \u0423\u0448\u0438\u043d\u0441\u043a\u043e\u043c\u0443 in Leningrad was made in 1945. The Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR approved it. This coincided with the upcoming 75th anniversary of the pedagogue’s death. Sculptor V. V. Lishev and architect V. I. Yakovlev designed the monument. The bronze sculpture was cast at the Monument sculpture factory in 1953. The Leningrad stone processing plant crafted the pedestal. The statue’s solemn opening took place on June 30 1961.
