In 1958, there was a contest for the best obelisk design. It was to celebrate the dawn of the Space Age. Sculptor A.P. Faidysh-Krandievsky and architects A.N. Kolchin and M.O. Barshch won.
The statue of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky is in front of the obelisk. He was a precursor of astronautics. The monument’s base has reliefs. These show the people of the space program. Scientists and engineers appear here. Workers are also shown. Laika the space dog is featured. She was the first living creature to orbit Earth.
No Soviet politicians are on the monument. But the crowd moves under Vladimir Lenin’s banner. The Monument to the Conquerors of Space appeared on a 1967 coin. The Pet Shop Boys featured it in their “Go West” music video. Deep Forest also used it in “Sweet Lullaby.”
There are replicas of the monument elsewhere. Borovsk has a replica of the “rocket needle.” The United Nations Office in Geneva also exhibits a copy.
