“Flug’s Lane” a whisper from the past echoes here. Before us stretches Kantemirovskaya Street a vital artery of Saint Petersburg. Its history is woven into the very fabric of this city. It’s a story of industrial might Soviet ambition and the enduring spirit of its people.

Kantemirovskaya Street. Its name a tribute to a 1942 Soviet victory. The battle of Kantemirovka a pivotal moment in World War II. This street however boasts a far older heritage. Long before the Soviet era it was known as Flugov pereulok. This name honored Heinrich Gabriel Pflug a 19th-century industrialist of German descent. His cordage factory a local landmark stood near the embankment. His family even knew the famed painter Pavel Fedotov.

The street’s early 20th-century development mirrored the city’s industrial growth. Factories sprang up along its length providing employment for thousands. Among them the cotton mill owned by von Hueck and later Joseph Cheshire. This eventually became a joint-stock company nationalized after the revolution. It was renamed Krasniy mayak the Red Lighthouse. Its workers’ housing still stands today now a part of the Higher School of Economics campus. Nearby stood buildings of the Russian Renault automobile works later renamed for its chief designer Vladimir Klimov.

The 1930s saw significant changes. Two city blocks of dormitories for the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute. These Constructivist-style buildings housed students and provided amenities like a canteen club and even a cinema. Close by apartments were built for specialists. These were high-quality apartments far superior to the standard workers’ housing. The House of Specialists housed engineers scientists and cultural figures. Its residents included renowned figures like Mikhail Bonch-Bruevich Nathan Altman and Vitaliy Khlopin. Memorial plaques honor their contributions.

The street underwent further transformation in the 1950s. More residential buildings appeared. The Polytechnic Institute dormitory complex was enlarged. A pediatric institute dormitory added to the mix. A polymer production design bureau also made its home here.

The 1970s witnessed another surge of development. The city’s road network was re-engineered. Kantemirovskaya Street was significantly widened. The construction of the Kantemirovskiy bridge connected it to the Petrograd side of the city. This greatly increased traffic and the street’s importance. Trolleybus routes 46 and 31 traverse the street to this day.

The final pieces of Kantemirovskaya’s story unfolded in the 21st century. Some factories were repurposed. Office spaces filled former industrial buildings. New apartment buildings rose changing the street’s skyline. School 104 underwent extensive renovations. The Europolis shopping mall opened nearby. Yet amidst the modern buildings the legacy of Flugov pereulok and the echoes of the Red Army’s victory remain tangible reminders of Kantemirovskaya’s rich and layered past. This is Kantemirovskaya Street. Its past present and future entwined. A street that truly embodies the spirit of Saint Petersburg.
