Founded on July 6 1765 Kamenka stands as a testament to the ambition of Catherine the Great. This Crown Colony nestled along the Ilovlya River initially bore another name. For a time it was known as Bähr. This honored Samuel Bähr one of Kamenka’s first mayors. Peter Simon Pallas a renowned traveler documented Kamenka in 1793. He described it as flourishing and opulent. He noted its sixty fireplaces and excellent well water. Imagine Pallas’s journey. He likely saw the thriving community. He probably felt the intense heat reflected off the snow. The Volga River only fifteen versts away must have seemed close. Kamenka’s story extends beyond its founding. St Mary’s Catholic Church built in 1906-1907 was a symbol of the colony’s rich culture. The church’s neo-Gothic architecture was striking. Murals painted by Italian craftsmen adorned its walls. Sadly during the Stalinist era the church was desecrated. It became a warehouse a tractor garage. Only ruins remain today. But the memories of St Mary’s and the many priests who served there linger. Johannes Müller Melchior Trenker Johannes Dedukla Thomas Majewski Sebastiani Thaddaeus Valerianus and many more. Their legacies are interwoven with the history of Kamenka. The records show a growing population. From 329 households in 1767 to over 3000 in the early 20th century. This reflects Kamenka’s prosperity. The numbers offer a glimpse into the lives lived here generations ago. Their struggles their triumphs their faith. All are etched into the very fabric of Kamenka. Today Kamenka remains a significant part of Saint Petersburg’s heritage. Its quiet story reflects a larger history. A history of settlement faith and resilience. A history well worth remembering.
