Have you ever felt the pull of the cosmos? Here, towering above us, on Malaya Pirogovskaya Street, stands the Institute of Physics, Technology and Information Systems of Moscow State Pedagogical University, better known as ИФТИС МПГУ. This remarkable building holds within its walls an extraordinary history, where the pursuit of knowledge has unfolded for over a century. Imagine stepping into a world where the laws of physics are explored, groundbreaking technologies are conceived, and generations of brilliant minds are nurtured. Since its inception, the institute has been a beacon of scientific inquiry, attracting some of the most brilliant scientific thinkers of its time. I can only tell you a small part of its fascinating tale.

The story starts in 1872, when a group of professors from Moscow Imperial University, now Moscow State University, established Moscow Higher Women’s Courses. This was a bold move, as women were not typically allowed to attend university at that time. The courses included a physical and mathematical department, and physics was a compulsory subject. Over the decades, many renowned scientists graced the institute’s halls, contributing their brilliance to the world of physics. To name but a few: S. A. Chaplygin, V. I. Vernadsky, A. V. Tsinger, and the Nobel Prize Winner I. E. Tamm, to name just a few. Their dedication and brilliance propelled the institute to new heights, making this place a hub of scientific discovery.

Within the institute’s walls, an observatory was established in 1904. The shop owner E. S. Tryndin opened this observatory on one of Moscow’s seven hills, giving people a chance to witness the wonders of the night sky. The institute’s observatory has a special place in the heart of Moscow. It offers a unique vantage point to observe the cosmos, all while being surrounded by the vibrancy of the Russian capital.

This observatory has become a symbol of the institute’s commitment to scientific exploration. Today, under its dome, you can still find the ABP-2 telescope, the third largest stationary telescope in Moscow. It is a testament to the institute’s enduring legacy in the world of astronomy. This impressive observatory has drawn countless aspiring astronomers, students, and curious minds over the years, offering an unparalleled experience in the field of cosmic observation. Imagine standing on the observation deck, the telescope’s sleek metal gleaming under the city lights, and gazing upon the boundless expanse of the universe. It’s a truly magical moment. And the fascinating history of this place, a history of women’s empowerment and scientific exploration, adds another layer of enchantment to this experience.
