“Pushkin House a name apart A name with meaning for the heart” These words by Alexander Blok resonate even today. We stand before the Institute of Russian Literature better known as the Pushkin House. This magnificent building holds centuries of Russian literary history.

The Pushkin House wasn’t always here. Its journey began in 1905. A commission wanted to honor Alexander Pushkin. They proposed a museum not a statue. This museum would preserve Pushkin’s manuscripts and belongings. Grand Duke Constantine Constantinovich supported this idea. The dream was a Neoclassical building. Lack of funds delayed the project.

Then came a significant development. In 1907 a proposal emerged to acquire a vast collection in Paris. Alexander Onegin had amassed Pushkin’s manuscripts and memorabilia since 1879. The negotiations lasted until Onegin’s death in 1925. The collection finally arrived in Russia.

The Russian Revolution transformed Russia. Most non-governmental organizations shut down. The Pushkin House survived. It became part of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1918. Influential figures like Anatoly Lunacharsky Lev Kamenev and Maxim Gorky protected it.

In 1927 the Pushkin House found a permanent home. It moved to the impressive neo-Palladian Customs House. This building was constructed between 1829 and 1832. It stands near the Strelka. Alexander Blok’s poem celebrated its significance during turbulent times.

The Pushkin House’s collections are extraordinary. They include manuscripts from the 13th century onward. You’ll find portraits and personal documents of famous Russian authors. There are also rare music recordings. The Institute is organized into several departments. These include departments for Old Russian literature Russian folklore and Pushkin studies. A literary museum is also located here.

The Pushkin House endured the Siege of Leningrad. Staff and manuscripts were evacuated to safer locations. After the war the institute continued its important work. Scholars like Boris Eikhenbaum and Dmitry Likhachov contributed significantly.

Today the Pushkin House continues its mission. It’s a leading center for Russian literary research. It preserves and shares the rich heritage of Russian literature. It’s a testament to the enduring power of words and the legacy of Pushkin. It’s a place where history whispers and stories come alive. A place where the spirit of Russian literature endures. We’ve only scratched the surface of the remarkable story of the Pushkin House. I encourage you to explore its depths further.
