Across the street stands the imposing edifice of the INZhEKON Educational Building No. 2, also known as Saint Petersburg State University of Economics and Finance (INZhEKON). Let’s delve into its rich history. The roots of INZhEKON trace back to the modest Trade Courses of M. V. Pobedinskogo, established in 1897. These courses quickly gained popularity, becoming a hub for aspiring young minds eager to learn the intricacies of trade and practical economics. The courses underwent a transformation in 1904, evolving into the esteemed Saint Petersburg Commercial Courses. With an emphasis on higher education, they provided a stepping stone for future business leaders and economic thinkers. In 1906, the institution achieved a significant milestone, officially gaining the status of Higher Commercial Courses. This recognition marked its growing importance in the Russian landscape of commerce and education. The institution continued to flourish, embracing the title of Higher Commercial Institute in 1917. Amidst the turmoil of that year, the institute became part of the Trade and Industry Institute of M. V. Pobedinskogo, reflecting the broader changes sweeping across Russia. In 1919, it joined the ranks of the Institute of National Economy, solidifying its role in the country’s economic development. By 1926, the Leningrad Institute of National Economy (LINE) had emerged. Within its structure, a self-governing Industrial Department flourished, nurturing future engineers and industrialists. This department, with its 79 members, laid the foundation for INZhEKON’s future identity. On June 26, 1930, the Industrial Department was reorganized into the Leningrad Institute of Industrial and Labor. A month later, on August 21, it officially became the Leningrad Institute of Finance and Economics (LFEI). Over the years, the institution underwent several name changes. In 1992, it was renamed Saint Petersburg State University of Economics and Finance (INZhEKON). In 2000, it became known as INZhEKON, underscoring its focus on engineering and economic development. INZhEKON continued to evolve, adapting to the changing times. In 2005, it established a presence at the Knowledge Village, a special economic zone dedicated to promoting knowledge-based industries. Finally, in 2012, INZhEKON merged with other institutions to form the Saint Petersburg State University of Economics, marking a new chapter in its long and distinguished history. Today, the INZhEKON building stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of economic and financial education in Saint Petersburg.
