Journey back to the mid-18th century. Imagine Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, daughter of Peter the Great, commanding a new wing for her beloved Monplaisir Palace. This wing, the Yekaterininsky Korpus (Catherine Wing), became a place of grand receptions, balls, and masquerades. The Yekaterininsky Korpus in Peterhof stands as a testament to the opulence of Imperial Russia. Designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli in the Baroque style, the building is instantly recognizable. Its yellow plaster facade and single-story structure exude a charming elegance. Initially called the “Stone Chambers”, the Yekaterininsky Korpus served as the private retreat for Empress Elizabeth. It also provided a venue for her lavish court life. Later, Catherine II, for whom the wing was ultimately named, left her own mark on the building. Upon her ascension to the throne, she commissioned Giacomo Quarenghi to redesign the interiors in the neoclassical style. This blend of Baroque and Neoclassical elements makes the Yekaterininsky Korpus unique. Inside, you would discover a fascinating collection of Russian Imperial artifacts. You’d see furniture, porcelain, and personal items that once belonged to empresses and emperors. Among the highlights is the Chesma Service, a stunning set of porcelain commemorating a Russian naval victory. The service, displayed in the Chesma Hall, depicts scenes from the Battle of Chesma. This hall, originally designed by Rastrelli, underwent transformation under Quarenghi. He installed the decorative panels that showcase Rossi’s depictions of the battle. The Yekaterininsky Korpus was more than just a place for royal gatherings. It held deep personal significance for its occupants. It was within these walls that Catherine II established the Russian or Gurevsky Service. This specialized service managed the dining and domestic affairs of the palace. It employed over 4500 individuals. Their tasks ranged from preparing elaborate feasts to maintaining the pristine condition of the palace grounds. Today, the Yekaterininsky Korpus offers a glimpse into the world of Imperial Russia. It echoes with stories of power, elegance, and intrigue. It stands as a beautiful landmark. It also serves as a living museum. It connects us to the lives of those who shaped Russian history.
