He played a key role in bringing Georgia under Soviet control. He was also instrumental in the industrialization of the Soviet Union.

\u0413. \u041a. \u041e\u0440\u0434\u0436\u043e\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438\u0434\u0437\u0435 joined the Bolsheviks in 1903. He quickly rose through the ranks. By 1912 he was already a member of the party’s central committee. His early career was marked by revolutionary activities and arrests. These activities led to exile in Siberia.

After the February Revolution in 1917 \u0413. \u041a. \u041e\u0440\u0434\u0436\u043e\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438\u0434\u0437\u0435 returned from exile. He joined the Petrograd Soviet’s executive committee. He also became a member of the Bolshevik Party committee.

Following the Bolshevik seizure of power in October 1917 \u0413. \u041a. \u041e\u0440\u0434\u0436\u043e\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438\u0434\u0437\u0435 became a commissar in Ukraine in 1918. In 1921 he became a member of the Party’s Central Committee. That same year, he became chairman of the Caucasian Bureau. Despite objections to his brutal methods, Ordzhonikidze helped the Red Army conquer Georgia. He then merged Georgia with Armenia and Azerbaijan. This created the Transcaucasian Federal Republic. This republic then joined Russia, Belorussia and Ukraine to form the Soviet Union in December 1922.

During the intraparty power struggles of the mid-1920s, \u0413. \u041a. \u041e\u0440\u0434\u0436\u043e\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438\u0434\u0437\u0435 generally supported Stalin. He became commissar for heavy industry in 1932. Some claim that he opposed Stalin’s policies and terroristic rule.

Officially, \u0413. \u041a. \u041e\u0440\u0434\u0436\u043e\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438\u0434\u0437\u0435 died suddenly in 1937 from natural causes. However, Nikita Khrushchev later charged that Stalin drove him to suicide.
