How many stories can an airfield tell? Gorelovo, southwest of Saint Petersburg, whispers tales of fighter pilots, abandoned helicopters, and the dreams of flight enthusiasts. This is Gorelovo. It is more than just a place on a map. It’s a living, breathing chronicle of Russian aviation history.
Gorelovo was established in 1938. It was built as a fighter base. The 19th Independent Fighter Regiment called it home. Imagine the roar of engines as the regiment defended the northwestern borders. They were protecting Leningrad during the Winter War. Over three thousand sorties were flown from Gorelovo. This earned the regiment the Order of the Red Banner.
During World War II, Gorelovo witnessed the evolution of aerial warfare. I-16, I-153 and MiG-3 fighters all took to the skies from here. By 1941, MiG-3 and LaGG-3 fighters dominated the airfield. Imagine the intense air battles. The regiment logged over three thousand sorties and shot down 116 enemy aircraft. The cost was high. Thirty pilots and 57 aircraft were lost.
After the war, Gorelovo was upgraded. It was adapted to accommodate jet fighters. In 1957, nine regiments participated in Leningrad’s 250th-anniversary celebrations. MiG-19s flew along Nevsky Prospekt. The locals mistook the suspended fuel tanks for torpedoes.
In 1960, the Soviet Air Force abandoned Gorelovo. It was transformed into an aircraft repair facility. By the 1990s, it became a storage site. Around one hundred disused Mi-8 helicopters were stored here.
Today, Gorelovo has been reborn. It serves as a base for general aviation. It is a take-off site for the 419th Helicopter Repair Plant. A local flight school operates here. It offers training for both single and twin-engined aircraft.
Enthusiasts are working to restore an Ilyushin Il-14 to airworthy condition. This aircraft carries the name “Soviet Union”. Most of the former base is freely accessible. You can walk the partially overgrown taxiways. You can see the hulks of helicopters.
Gorelovo stands as a reminder. It is a reminder of the past and present. It is a place where echoes of aviation history mingle with the dreams of future pilots. The spirit of flight endures here. It bridges eras and inspires those who look to the sky.
