Across the Chernaya River stands the Golovinsky Bridge. Its story is one of resilience and transformation. A simple span today it boasts a rich history. The original wooden bridge opened in 1817. It connected the banks long before cars and trucks existed. Imagine horse-drawn carriages crossing this slender path.

The Golovinsky Bridge wasn’t always known by this name. Initially called the Stroganovsky Bridge. It took its current name from the nearby estate of Count Golovin. A testament to the bridge’s importance to the area’s elite.

The bridge faced several reconstructions. By 1875 a new wooden arch bridge stood. Stone abutments were added. This offered a more sturdy structure. War and time took their toll however. By 1944 the bridge was dilapidated. It needed urgent repair. Closed to traffic it was left to decay.

In 1948 under the supervision of engineer P Andreyevsky it was reborn. Wooden arches were replaced. Steel concrete beams curved gracefully beneath a concrete roadway. Art casting iron railings appeared. Granite parapets stood guard. The length expanded to 41.3 meters. Its width was 9.5 meters.

The bridge’s capacity couldn’t keep pace with growth. Increased traffic and heavier loads made another reconstruction necessary. Finally in 1976 Lengiproinzhproject engineers and architect V M Ivanov took on the task. They widened the bridge considerably. From a mere 9.5 meters to an impressive 27 meters. Interestingly enough the old spans were found to be in surprisingly good condition. Rather than destroying them engineers repurposed them. They used these old spans for the 1979 reconstruction of the Sutugin bridge.

Today the Golovinsky Bridge stands as a symbol of Petersburg’s enduring spirit. The massive reinforced concrete abutments faced with granite endure. Art casting iron railings reminiscent of the Bolshaya Nevka embankment remain. Four granite obelisks with golden Neptune tridents and eight octagonal prismatic lanterns decorate the entrances. This elegant addition adds to the bridge’s charm. The roadway paved in asphalt concrete speaks to modernity. Sand asphalt sidewalks ensure pedestrian safety. It’s a silent observer of the city’s constant evolution. This bridge is a testament to engineering ingenuity and Petersburg’s tenacious spirit. The Golovinsky Bridge is a remarkable piece of history.
