He sits astride a silver galloping horse. With a golden spear he strikes a golden winged serpent, or dragon.

Saint George has been associated with Moscow for centuries. Yaroslav the Wise used an image of Saint George on his seal. Saint George was his personal patron saint. Later Yury Dolgoruky, the founder of Moscow, also had Saint George as his patron.

The image of a horseman slaying a dragon evolved over time. Initially, it represented the Tsar defeating enemies. It became closely associated with Saint George. The Герб района Stele is therefore a powerful symbol.

After the Russian Revolution, old symbols were banned. In 1924, a new emblem was adopted. It featured a red star the sickle and hammer. This emblem reflected the union of city and countryside. However it never gained much popularity.

In 1993, Moscow reverted to its historical coat of arms. The design was based on the version used between 1883 and 1918. This restoration marked a return to Moscow’s roots. As the Russian Orthodox Church does not allow sculptures of saints, statues of Saint George were not erected before the Revolution. After the restoration of the emblem in 1993 statues of Saint George appeared in Moscow.
