The imposing figure of a knight on horseback rises from the ground and is a landmark throughout Moscow. Towering above, the bronze statue of Saint George battling the dragon is a symbol of courage and faith and a proud reminder of Moscow’s history. This sculpture, crafted by the prominent Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, was erected in 1995. The statue stands on the Poklonnaya Hill, part of Victory Park, which overlooks the city’s largest park. Saint George, a warrior saint who is also the patron saint of the city, is shown piercing a dragon with a lance, representing the triumph of good over evil. Legend has it that Saint George saved a princess from a fearsome dragon, which was terrorizing the city, by defeating the beast. The legend is depicted in many types of art, but Tsereteli chose to portray Saint George as a towering figure in a bold and confident pose. This sculpture has cemented its place as a recognizable symbol of Moscow and a reminder of the city’s rich and fascinating past.
