This monument honors Vladimir Fedorovich Snegirev. He was not just a doctor. He was the founder of national gynecology.

Thanks to Snegirev’s work, Russia led in gynecological discoveries. He elevated the status of Russian gynecologists worldwide. Snegirev once proudly declared that Russian names held an honorable place in every area of gynecology. This high standing is a direct result of his skilled work.

Born in 1847, Vladimir Fedorovich Snegirev had a tough early life. He lost his parents when he was young. Despite this, he excelled in his studies. He later attended the Kronstadt Navigator School. A philanthropist, Shelaputin, recognized Snegirev’s potential. Shelaputin supported his education.

From 1865 to 1870, Snegirev studied at Moscow University’s Medical Faculty. After graduating with honors, he began working at the Yauza Hospital. He also worked in the Moscow maternity hospital. Snegirev became very interested in how lifestyle affected women’s health.

During epidemics, Snegirev bravely fought dangerous diseases. He went to the Podolsk district during a cholera outbreak. There, he provided medical help to the population. He also took part in sanitary measures. Snegirev understood the struggles of zemstvo doctors. Zemstvo doctors worked hard. They were underappreciated. He believed their work should be honored.

Even as a famous professor, Snegirev continued to help those in need. He opened a practice near Aleksin. He invested his own money to expand it. Colleagues and students helped him. The Aleksinsky Hospital provided free medical care. Operations started early at 6 AM. Snegirev’s rounds often lasted until 3 PM.

In 1873, he defended his dissertation. It addressed surgical intervention in gynecological diseases. As a professor, Snegirev gave the first lecture on ovariotomy. This lecture laid the foundation for teaching gynecology.

In 1884, Snegirev created a major work on uterine bleeding. It became the first national guide to gynecology. By 1885, he was a professor at Moscow University. Snegirev’s work covered many gynecological problems. These included fibroma removal and uterine bleeding.

Thanks to Snegirev, the first operating rooms appeared in hospital gynecology departments in 1886. He performed countless surgeries there. In 1887, he created the Moscow Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He served as its chairman.

Under Snegirev’s leadership, the first model university clinic opened in 1889. It welcomed women doctors. This was a progressive step for the time. In 1896, Snegirev founded the Institute for Advanced Training of Gynecologists. He led it until his death.

Vladimir Fedorovich Snegirev performed around five thousand gynecological operations. He invented new ways to treat female genital organs. He also emphasized postoperative care. Snegirev died in 1916 at the age of 70. He had contracted pneumonia.

Today, the Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the First Moscow Medical University bears his name. Maternity hospital No. 6 in St. Petersburg is also named after him. The district hospital in Aleksin honors him as well. This monument of \u0412. \u0424. \u0421\u043d\u0435\u0433\u0438\u0440\u0451\u0432 stands as a reminder of his lasting contribution to medicine. His legacy lives on.
