“In memory of the heroism and courage of Leningraders during the 900-day siege of the city this inscription is preserved” These words etched onto the memorial plaque before us tell a story of immense suffering. A story of resilience and survival. This plaque isn’t just a marker. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a city under siege.

The plaque commemorates a wartime warning. During the Siege of Leningrad a simple message was stenciled onto the walls. “Citizens During shelling this side of the street is the most dangerous”. This chilling message appeared on streets throughout the city. It warned people of the most dangerous areas from artillery fire. The Germans shelled Leningrad relentlessly. They fired tens of thousands of shells. Many citizens were killed or injured.

These warnings were a grim reality for the citizens of Leningrad. They were a constant reminder of the ever-present danger. The warnings were stenciled by members of the local anti-aircraft defence organisation. One woman recalled using a large stencil and red-brown paint. The paint was the same kind used for painting floors. The warnings were not just functional. They became a powerful symbol of the siege itself.

The warnings gradually disappeared after the war ended. However they were not forgotten. Poet Mikhail Dudin spearheaded a campaign to have the message recreated. In 1962 the inscription appeared again. This time it was on a school building on Nevsky Prospect. Architect V D Popov designed the accompanying memorial plaque.

Over the next few years similar inscriptions and plaques appeared throughout Leningrad. They stand as memorials to the siege’s victims. Each plaque contains the inscription “In memory of the heroism and courage of Leningraders during the 900-day siege of the city this inscription is preserved”. The plaques are now considered important monuments. They are sites for commemorations of the siege. The inscription even appears in Kronstadt. There the wording is slightly different but the meaning is the same.

Despite their importance the inscriptions and plaques have been vandalized. Some have even been stolen. The warnings have also been used as political statements. One example appeared in 2010. It criticized the then Governor of Saint Petersburg for failing to keep the city streets clear of snow and ice.

This plaque before us is more than just a historical marker. It is a deeply moving reminder of the horrors of war. It also bears witness to the resilience and bravery of the Leningraders. It’s a place of remembrance and a symbol of hope. Let us take a moment to reflect on their suffering. Let us honor their strength. Let us never forget the lessons learned during the Siege of Leningrad.
