Could a simple train journey spark a revolution? Here, at the Monument to V. I. Lenin, that question hangs heavy in the air. V. I. Lenin arrived at this very spot, the Finland Railway Station, in April 1917. He returned from exile, stepping off the train onto a platform buzzing with anticipation. V. I. Lenin, the architect of the October Revolution, immediately climbed atop an armored car. He delivered an impassioned speech to the crowd of workers, soldiers, and sailors. This moment, captured in bronze and granite, marks a pivotal point in Russian history. The monument itself, unveiled in 1926, stands as a powerful symbol of Lenin’s influence. The sculptor, Sergey Evseev, depicted Lenin with his left hand tucked into his waistcoat, his right hand raised in a gesture that seemed to propel the revolution forward. Interestingly, this design became the prototype for countless Lenin statues erected across the Soviet Union, echoing the image of the leader across the land. Originally positioned closer to the station, the monument was moved during the square’s reconstruction in 1945, solidifying its central place in the city’s landscape. The armored car, upon which Lenin spoke, is incorporated into the monument itself, forever linking him to that electrifying moment of arrival. This very monument, however, has also witnessed its own share of turmoil. In 2009, a small explosion damaged the statue, reminding us that Lenin’s legacy remains a subject of debate and contention. The perpetrators were never found, leaving the motivations behind the attack shrouded in mystery. Despite this, the monument was meticulously restored, continuing to stand as a testament to Lenin’s indelible mark on the 20th century. It serves as a reminder of that day in April 1917 when V. I. Lenin’s arrival at Finland Station set in motion a chain of events that would irrevocably alter the course of Russian and global history.
