A road whispering tales of centuries past. Today, we stand at the Vyborgskoye Shosse. It is one of Saint Petersburg’s oldest streets. This isn’t just a road. It’s a journey through time.

Vyborgskoye Shosse stretches through the Vyborgsky district. It runs from Engels Avenue to the city boundary. Think of it as the main northern gateway into Saint Petersburg. It is a vital artery that has shaped the city’s growth.

Its history is long. The road’s origins trace back to a time when Sweden ruled this land. It was part of a route connecting Nyenschantz to Vyborg. These were Swedish strongholds then. This path predates Saint Petersburg itself. It reflects a history of shifting borders.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, it became known as Vyborgsky Trakt. Later, it was called Staraya Vyborgskaya Doroga. It then became Pargolovskaya Doroga. These names echo the road’s changing roles and destinations.

The Vyborgskoye Shosse we see today began to take shape in 1832. This coincided with major road construction. The name Vyborgsky Trakt stuck around for a while. It was used from 1836 to the 1850s. Doroga v Pargolovo was another name. It was used from 1860 to 1873. Pargolovsky Prospekt was used in 1889.

Today, Vyborgskoye Shosse is a modern thoroughfare. It connects bustling city districts. It stretches out toward the suburbs.

As you travel along Vyborgskoye Shosse, imagine the travelers of old. Envision merchants. See soldiers. Think of messengers. They all journeyed this way. They shaped the destiny of this region. They left their mark on the land.

The road passes close to notable locations. Ozerek, Shuvalovo, and Shuvalovskoe Cemetery lie nearby. It runs parallel to the shores of the Suzdal lakes. It separates residential areas from the Ozerki dacha construction.

Where a modern hypermarket stands today, a church once stood. It was the Church of St. Maria Magdalena. It served the Novo-Pargolovo German colony. Sadly, it no longer exists.

The city part of the Shosse ends after crossing Suzdal Avenue. This is at a two-level transport interchange. It is near the Okruzhnaya Zheleznaya Doroga railway bridge.

Beyond Pargolovo, Vyborgskoye Shosse continues. It crosses the A118 K кольtsevaya Avtomobilnaya Doroga. It leads toward the Osinovaya Roshcha. This area offers a glimpse into the past.

Vyborgskoye Shosse ends at the border of Saint Petersburg. It continues into the Vsevolozhsk district. It becomes regional roads 41A-180 and 41K-181. These roads merge with the A181 “Scandinavia” highway near Vyborg.

So, as we stand here on Vyborgskoye Shosse, remember its story. It is a story of trade. It is a story of conflict. It is a story of a city’s enduring connection to its past. This road is more than just a way to get from place to place. It’s a link to the very soul of Saint Petersburg.
