Did Falconet ever imagine his creation would become so synonymous with Saint Petersburg? Here, before the magnificent Bronze Horseman, it’s hard not to feel the weight of history. The Bronze Horseman isn’t merely a statue. It’s a symbol of Saint Petersburg, a testament to Peter the Great’s ambition, and a powerful representation of the complex relationship between a ruler and his people. Catherine the Great commissioned this statue to solidify her own legacy, linking herself to the revered Peter. The inscriptions, both in Latin and Russian, “Catherine the Second to Peter the First, 1782”, make this connection explicit. She saw herself as continuing his work, his rightful heir. It took twelve years, from 1770 to 1782, to complete this masterpiece. The sculptor, Étienne Maurice Falconet, poured his heart and soul into this project, only to leave Russia due to a conflict with the Empress before its unveiling. The young Marie-Anne Collot sculpted Peter’s face, working from his death mask and portraits. Imagine the skill of an 18-year-old capturing the essence of a Tsar. The horse rears, a symbol of power and dynamism, trampling a serpent, which many interpret as treachery or the enemies of Peter’s reforms. This majestic statue stands atop the Thunder Stone, a massive granite boulder weighing 1,250 tons, originally even heavier. It was transported from Lakhta, a remarkable feat of engineering in itself, taking 400 men nine months to move. The Bronze Horseman is more than just a statue. It inspired Pushkin’s famous poem, also titled “The Bronze Horseman,” further cementing its place in Russian culture. The poem explores the tragic consequences of Peter’s grand vision for Saint Petersburg, a city built on a swamp, prone to devastating floods. The statue survived the Siege of Leningrad, protected by sandbags and a wooden shelter, a silent witness to the city’s resilience. The Bronze Horseman stands tall, a symbol of Saint Petersburg’s enduring spirit, a reminder of the city’s triumphs and tragedies.
