“Why Vitebsk?” a curious mind might ask. Vitebsky Prospekt is more than just a street. It is a journey through time.
Vitebsky Prospekt stands as one of Saint Petersburg’s major thoroughfares. This avenue carves its way through the southern stretches of the city. It serves as a vital artery.
The story of Vitebsky Prospekt begins as far back as the early 20th century. Back then, it was simply known as the road to Kupchino. It stretched from Roshchinskaya Street to Bassseynaya Street.
In 1908, the road expanded northward. It connected to Vozdukhoplavatelnaya Street. By 1914, it reached southward. It stretched to the southern highway near Prospekt Slavy station. The street was then named Tsarskoselskaya. This honored its path toward the Tsarskoselskaya railway.
A name change occurred in 1918. The street became Detskosselskaya. This celebrated the renaming of Tsarskoye Selo to Detskoe Selo.
In 1935, Kupchinskaya Road and Detskosselskaya Street merged. They were renamed Kupchinskaya Road. Finally, in 1962, it received its current name. Vitebsky Prospekt was named to honor the Vitebsk railway line. This railway runs alongside it.
Vitebsky Prospekt saw further extensions between 1962 and 1966. It expanded as new streets emerged. In 1972, it stretched to Kupchino metro station. It also reached a railway station.
Significant changes continued into the 21st century. A new overpass opened in 2005. It connected Kupchino station to Moscow highway. Another section opened in 2008. This linked Shushary with Moscow highway and the Ring Road.
The connection between Vitebsky Prospekt’s old and new sections improved over time. In November-December 2015, a railway overpass was completed.
In 2023-2024, Vitebsky Prospekt and Vozdukhoplavatelnaya Street were streamlined. They were connected by a new overpass.
Today, several landmarks dot Vitebsky Prospekt. These include the Vozdukhoplovatelny Park. Also notable are Prospekt Slavy and Shushary.
Many public transport options serve Vitebsky Prospekt. Social and commercial buses run along it. Vitebsky Prospekt continues to evolve. It is a testament to Saint Petersburg’s dynamic growth.
