“Vitebsky Bridge” is a name that echoes through St. Petersburg’s history. This bridge before you is a single-span reinforced concrete structure. It gracefully crosses the Volkovka River. Opened in 2005, the Vitebsky Bridge might seem like any other modern bridge at first glance. Its total area spans 637.8 square meters. However, its name carries a deeper connection to St. Petersburg’s past. In 2009, it officially became known as the Vitebsky Bridge.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first Vitebsky Bridge in St. Petersburg. An earlier Vitebsky Bridge existed in the city’s historic center. Back in 1810, it spanned the Vvedensky Canal. This canal ran along Zagorodny Avenue.
Later, the Tsarskoye Selo Railway Station, now called Vitebsk Railway Station, was built nearby. In 1970, the Vvedensky Canal was filled up. Sadly, the original Vitebsky Bridge was dismantled six years later.
