Across the shimmering water, the largest of the Kirovohrad Ponds beckons. It’s hard to imagine this tranquil oasis, Verkhniy Kirovohradsky Pond, was once a neglected, forgotten corner of Moscow. But nature, it seems, always finds a way. Today, families relax on its banks. Children chase ducks. Locals enjoy a leisurely stroll. Verkhniy Kirovohradsky Pond, along with its siblings Sredniy and Nizhniy, are nestled in the heart of Chertanovo. They are a testament to Moscow’s efforts to reclaim and rejuvenate its urban spaces. These ponds weren’t always so inviting. In the 1970s, they were stagnant and overgrown. Then, from December 2016 to November 2017, a major restoration project breathed new life into the area. The project cleaned the ponds, strengthened the banks, and created dedicated areas for recreation. Now, the Verkhniy Kirovohradsky Pond boasts a well-maintained grassy area, perfect for picnics. The paths around the ponds are ideal for a relaxing walk. You might even spot some of the local fishermen casting their lines. They say the fish are plentiful these days, a sign of a healthy ecosystem restored.
