Thirty-six meters of grey granite pierce the St Petersburg sky. This is the Hero City Obelisk a monument to Leningrad’s unwavering spirit during the devastating Siege.

Before you stands a testament to resilience. The Hero City Obelisk commemorates the fortieth anniversary of the Red Army’s victory in the Great Patriotic War. Its creation was no small feat. A 2200-tonne monolith was carefully extracted from a quarry near Vyborg. Skilled builders and fitters then painstakingly polished the granite. Finally in early April 1985 the obelisk crowned with its iconic Gold Star was unveiled.

The obelisk’s design is striking. It’s pentahedral its cross-section shaped like a star. A bronze wreath encircles its lower part. Bronze high reliefs depict the heroic defense of Leningrad. The Gold Star at its peak shines brilliantly. It stands as the second tallest stone monument in Saint Petersburg.

Think of the stories etched within this granite. Over one million inhabitants perished during the siege. Starvation exposure and relentless shelling claimed countless lives. Three hundred thousand soldiers died defending and relieving Leningrad. This obelisk stands as a solemn reminder of their sacrifice. A sacrifice that earned Leningrad the prestigious title of Hero City in 1945.

The grey granite itself is symbolic. It resembles the color of a soldier’s greatcoat a poignant tribute to those who fought so bravely. The monument’s sheer height is awe-inspiring. It is a powerful visual reminder of the city’s enduring strength. It’s a symbol of hope born from unimaginable suffering.

As we stand here before the Hero City Obelisk remember the untold stories of courage and loss. Remember the city’s unwavering spirit. Remember the immense cost of victory. Let this monument serve as a constant reminder of the enduring human spirit. A spirit that can not be broken even in the face of unimaginable adversity.
