Remarkable isn’t it? This building before us the Byvshiy Smol’tritsel’skiy dom. A silent witness to St Petersburg’s dramatic past.
The Byvshiy Smol’tritsel’skiy dom stands proudly on Sadovaya Street. It’s a stunning blend of architectural styles. Modernist pseudo-gothic and other influences combine to create a unique beauty. Built between 1904 and 1907 by architect Alexander Lvovich Lishnevsky it was intended for city institutions. Think of it as a grand European town hall a symbol of municipal power.
Originally there was a competition for its design. Architect Alexander Ivanovich Dmitriev won initially. His design was deemed too tall however. Lishnevsky’s design was ultimately chosen. This magnificent structure which now proudly stands before you is a testament to Lishnevsky’s vision. It is considered one of St Petersburg’s five best early 20th-century buildings. The other four include the Kshesinskaya mansion the I Lidval mansion the E Zarudnoy-Kavos mansion and the House of the Singer Company.
The Byvshiy Smol’tritsel’skiy dom served many purposes. After the 1917 revolution it housed a school a factory and even the October District Committee of the Communist Party. For many years the Executive Committee of the District Council of People’s Deputies was located here. Today various organizations and city institutions including the State Multifunctional Center for the Provision of Public Services occupy this historic building.
Notice the owls. Those aren’t original. They were recreated in 2009 from artificial stone. Sculptors Sov Pavel Ignatiev and Denis Prasolov created them. Each owl stands 1.8 meters tall a watchful guardian of this piece of St Petersburg history. One stands guard on Sadovaya Street the others on Voznesensky Avenue.
The Byvshiy Smol’tritsel’skiy dom has seen so much. From its inception as a city hall to its role during the Soviet era. Its architectural beauty reflects the spirit of its time.
