Picture the imposing dome of Agios Titos. Feel the weight of centuries pressing down. This isn’t just any church in Heraklion. This is the Cathedral of Saint Titus a place steeped in history.
Agios Titos stands as a testament to Crete’s rich and often turbulent past. Dedicated to Saint Titus the first Bishop of Crete and a disciple of Paul the Apostle. It stands on the site of earlier churches destroyed and rebuilt over centuries. Imagine the faith that persisted through wars earthquakes and the shifting tides of empires.
The first church honoring Saint Titus may have been built as early as 961 AD. This was after the Byzantines reclaimed Crete from Arab rule. It was a crucial act of restoring Christianity to the island. Sacred relics from Gortyn the old capital were transferred. These included the skull of Saint Titus and the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mesopanditissa. These relics remained until the Venetian era.
Under Venetian rule Agios Titos became a Catholic church. It saw modifications and endured multiple earthquakes. A devastating fire in 1544 destroyed the building. It was rebuilt in the same style. Then came the Ottomans.
After the Ottomans conquered Heraklion in 1669 the church was transformed into a mosque. The Vizier Mosque as it was known. The sacred relics were moved for safekeeping to Venice. They remain there to this day except for the skull of Saint Titus. It was returned in 1966 and now rests in a silver reliquary within the church.
The earthquake of 1856 completely leveled the mosque. Architect Athanasios Moussis a man who also designed the Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Minas rebuilt it. He crafted the structure that stands before you today. It was originally a New Mosque or Yeni Cami.
Then in the 1920s the final Muslims left Heraklion. The minaret was removed. The Church of Crete repaired the structure. It was rededicated as an Orthodox church in 1925. In 2013 it finally became the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Crete.
Notice the eclectic style. The square temple topped with a dome. The vertical elements and stone-carved apse.
