Stefanos Sarafis, a name etched in Greek history, stands before you immortalized in bronze. The Stefanos Sarafis Statue commemorates a life intertwined with military service and political turmoil. Born in Trikala in 1890, Sarafis embarked on a path that would lead him to become a key figure in the Greek Resistance. He began his military career during the Balkan Wars, enlisting as a sergeant and quickly rising through the ranks to lieutenant. He became a supporter of Eleftherios Venizelos, a prominent political figure, and participated in Venizelist coup attempts in 1933 and 1935. The failed 1935 coup, intended to overthrow Panagis Tsaldaris’ government, led to Sarafis’s life imprisonment. He received a pardon, but his unwavering political stance wouldn’t allow him to remain silent. He later emerged as a prominent figure in the Greek Resistance. Initially involved with other resistance groups, Sarafis joined the communist-backed ELAS in 1943. His decision was influenced by ELAS’s growing strength and alignment with his own political leanings. He quickly rose to become the head of ELAS’s general staff. Sarafis’s leadership was crucial during the Resistance and the subsequent Dekemvriana clashes. After EAM’s defeat, he was exiled again. His story takes a poignant turn in 1938. Exiled to Milos, Sarafis met Marion Pascoe, an English archaeology student. He became her translator, and their conversations sparked a lifelong love for Greece in Marion and, reportedly, love for Sarafis himself. This seemingly insignificant meeting on a remote island would shape the final chapter of his life. Reunited with Marion after his release from exile in 1950, they married in 1952. Sarafis’s political life continued with the United Democratic Left (EDA), culminating in his election to parliament in 1956. Tragically, his life was cut short in 1957. A car accident in Alimos, caused by a US Air Force officer driving under the influence, claimed Sarafis’s life and injured Marion. The incident raised suspicions among EDA members and Marion, who believed it was a targeted attack. As you stand before the Stefanos Sarafis Statue, you are not just observing a bronze figure. You’re witnessing the embodiment of a man who dedicated his life to his beliefs, navigating the tumultuous currents of war and politics, only to meet an untimely end. His memory serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring spirit of resistance and the unpredictable nature of fate.
