Deep within Penteli Mountain lies the Davelis Cave a place steeped in mystery and history. This isn’t just any cave. The Davelis Cave boasts a rich past. It was first uncovered around the 5th century BC. Marble quarry workers accidentally stumbled upon it while extracting stone for the Acropolis.

For centuries before that the Davelis Cave served as a sacred site. Followers of Pan and the nymphs worshipped here. Think of the ancient rituals. Imagine the offerings left for these nature deities. Remnants of those ancient practices remain. Niches and pedestals once held statues and gifts. Today you can find these artifacts in Athens’ Archaeological Museum.

The Davelis Cave’s name comes from a legendary 19th-century brigand Christos Natsios known as Davelis. Rumor has it he used the cave as a hideout. People believed he hid his treasure within its depths. The official name however is simply the Cave of Pendeli.

During the Middle Ages the cave became a refuge for Orthodox Christian hermits. They sought solace and spiritual renewal in this secluded spot. Later a small church was built at its entrance. This church features a unique double layout. One section is dedicated to Saint Spyridon the other to Saint Nicholas. This unusual design has intriguingly led some to connect the church’s construction to Gnostic beliefs.

But the Davelis Cave’s story doesn’t end there. Between 1977 and 1983 mysterious construction works took place. The reasons remain unclear. Some believe it was a planned nuclear weapons storage facility. Others suggest it was a radar or communication base. Whatever the purpose the works ceased in 1983. The incomplete structures remain today easily accessible to visitors.

Even today the Davelis Cave retains its mystical aura. Dozens of urban legends surround it. Some speak of paranormal activity echoing from ancient times. Others mention strange sightings. Electronics malfunction near the cave. Water sometimes flows uphill. Mysterious cat-like creatures are said to roam its vicinity.

Etchings on the cave’s walls bear witness to the passage of time. Nineteenth and early twentieth-century English writers left their mark. Their presence adds another layer to the cave’s intriguing history. Explore this fascinating cave. But remember to be respectful. It’s unprotected and vulnerable to damage. Take a flashlight and sturdy shoes. The Davelis Cave awaits. Discover its secrets for yourself.
