In 1923, a wave of Greek refugees arrived in Athens, seeking solace and a new beginning. Among them were families from Saframbolu, a town nestled in the region of Asia Minor, now modern-day Turkey. These families brought with them not only their personal belongings but also the echoes of a rich history and cultural heritage. They carried the memories of their beloved Saframbolu. Saframbolu, a neighborhood in Athens, became a poignant reminder of their former home. Before the population exchange, Saframbolu boasted a vibrant Greek community of around 3000 people. They had built a church dedicated to St. Stefan. A marble inscription within the church spoke of its founding, attributed to Empress Eudokia in the 4th century AD. The inscription also described a relic gifted to the church by the empress: a part of the martyr’s left leg. The fall of Saframbolu to the Seljuks in 1196 marked a turning point. Many Greeks fled, yet some families found refuge in Kırköy, where they remained until 1923. The memory of Saframbolu in Asia Minor lives on in the hearts of the descendants who now call Athens their home. They remember their roots and the journey that brought them to this bustling Greek capital. Saframbolu, the neighborhood in Athens, became a quiet testament to their resilience and a poignant echo of a distant past.
