Have you ever heard of a bridge that disappears and reappears with the rhythm of the sea? This is the magical story of the Ρωμαϊκό Υδραγωγείο, also known as Kamares, an ancient Roman aqueduct right here in Chalkidiki, Greece. It was a lifeline for ancient Chalkidiki, channeling precious fresh water to the city. The Romans, masters of infrastructure, designed the Kamares with remarkable precision. Legend has it, the bridge was built by a giant, who, heartbroken by a lost love, would retreat under the arches with every rising tide, taking the bridge with him. As the tide receded, so did his sorrow, and the bridge would magically reappear, intact and ready to serve the city. While the giant’s tale remains a local myth, the sight of the Kamares, emerging from the receding water, is no less enchanting.
