Have you ever heard of a bridge that disappears and reappears with the rhythm of the sea? This is the magical story of the Ρωμαϊκό Υδραγωγείο, also known as Kamares, an ancient Roman aqueduct right here in Chalkidiki, Greece. Standing before you are the weathered yet elegant arches, a testament to the ingenuity of Roman engineering. The aqueduct, my friends, was no ordinary bridge. It was a lifeline for ancient Chalkidiki, channeling precious fresh water to the city. The Romans, masters of infrastructure, designed the Kamares with remarkable precision. But there’s more to this bridge than meets the eye. Legend has it, the bridge was built by a giant, who, heartbroken by a lost love, would retreat under the arches with every rising tide, taking the bridge with him. As the tide receded, so did his sorrow, and the bridge would magically reappear, intact and ready to serve the city. While the giant’s tale remains a local myth, the sight of the Kamares, emerging from the receding water, is no less enchanting.
